I don't think I'm a coach (more on that soon)

Summer is heating up

Hi Reader,

This heatwave. I know I'm not the only one thanking God for air conditioning right now.

This month has been a whirlwind. I've been reading, walking the dog before the sun gets too hot, celebrating birthdays with friends and family.

On a more personal note, I'm officially the mom of an 18 year old. Another milestone in the parenting journey, checked off.

I also started a business coaching program that runs through September. It's been eye opening. I'll always believe in coaching, because you cannot see yourself inside the frame of your own picture. Knowing when to ask for help is half the work of getting where you're going.

I've been experimenting a lot inside this program, and here's what I'm learning: I don't think I'm a coach in the traditional sense. Niching down has been the real work. More on that in this newsletter.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves Matter The Most

This month I went to Denver for the GlobeSt. Women of Influence conference and it was a great opportunity to get inspired and realize that women leaders and entrepreneurs are so friendly, dynamic, and authentic.

The fireside with Amanda Knox was a highlight of the conference and quite a cautionary tale. If you're not familiar with her story, I'd encourage you to go down the media rabbit hole of her wikipedia page to learn how stories can be spun even when evidence may tell a different story.

Two quotes that stood out to me from her fireside chat were:

“I think women find ourselves in situations where people are imposing their reality on us a lot, constantly. And when you’re a woman, I find that no matter what you do, people find a reason for it to be a fault.”
“Believe what you want to believe. Project what you want to project. That’s on you. I know that I have this competence. This is who I am. This is what I am capable of. And I am going to go about my life not responding to what you’re going to do, but writing my own story.”

I haven't watched her Hulu documentary however seeing her speak has made me curious about how she kept her sanity amidst the ultimate persecution.

I'm building out loud (and it's a little terrifying)

I joined a business coaching program this month. One of the first things they asked me to do nearly stopped me in my tracks:

Distill what you know into one topic you can offer into one digital experience.

If you know me, you know this is a problem. I'm an adjunct instructor, a facilitator, a women's leadership coach. Asking me to pick one thing is like asking a librarian for her favorite book. I love all of it. I want to teach you everything.

But they made me sit with it. Really sit with it. What's the one topic I keep coming back to? The thing that, I talk about the most when I start coaching women, or a topic I'd want them walking away knowing?

That question cracked something open.

So here's what I've been quietly considering: a 21-Day Practice Experiment for women who are in the middle of a transition or who don't have a daily practice. Not a course. Not another thing to add to your list. A practice, one day at a time, for reconnecting with yourself in these "tumultuous times".

I'm telling you about it now, before it's finished, because I want to build this thing out loud. I want to test what resonates, see what lands, figure out the shape of it with input from actual humans, 25 women to be exact, instead of guessing alone in a Google Doc. That feels new for me. A little exposed, honestly. I'm used to showing up polished, not showing up messy however mid-process is actually a sigh of relief.

But that's kind of the point, isn't it? Practice over perfect.

If you'd like to be on the priority list to hear more as this takes shape, just let me know. I'll keep you posted as it comes together.
